The LA-based veteran artist has been in the music game for a while until he decided to take a brief hiatus. This eclectic artist was already taking over Soundcloud with his undisguised beats and versatile sound that cuts across pop, punk, rock, and rap. Dead Hendrix, on the other hand, is a rising Ottawa-based dynamic artist who wants to make his mark by telling his stories and those of others through music. When this duo came together, a musical connection was triggered. That is how they decided to blend their musical content to engineer what has been a unanimously acclaimed EP-themed “DEAD SUMMER”.
When the pandemic hit, everything stopped, and the world stood still. We witnessed a series of events that will never be wiped from the memories of those who made it through. “DEAD SUMMER” was inspired by the literal death of summer and the loss of life that the pandemic brought; bar the theme’s melancholic nature, the tracks are nothing less than entertaining and engaging.
What you get is an immersive listening experience that coherently blends that punk attitude with pop sensibilities and the swagger of rap-rock. The duo exhibits uncompromising and bold authenticity, making this EP a timeless masterpiece.
You’ve got to appreciate the raw intensity and fierce determination with which the drums and guitars are hit in the banger “LOVE GAME”—absolutely rip-roaring with the fast-paced, distorted riffs, which are some of my favorite bits about this performance. The self-assured vocals lusciously slink with command and theatrics to drive the point home, the point being that incessant experience that sometimes hits us where we can’t get out of our head, delivered with such a vulnerable tone. It’s hard to deny its incredibly vibrant rock features!
“ALONE” is a textural sound that balances the tension of edgy pop-rock with the vivid storytelling of hip-hop. Delivered from each performer’s contrasting point of view about loneliness and confusion, this is one to appeal to a wide fan base both in lyricism and melodicism.
“DON’T THINK IT COULD GET MUCH BETTER” pulls a listener into an emotional stupor, with the extremely catchy hooks remaining ingrained in a listener’s brain outside of this epic banger (I can still feel it playing over my head as I write this). A bonafide standout, this is a potential top-charter with the duo delivering a powerful punch, building on the aggressive rhythmic landscape that the melodies afford with the acerbic tones in the lyricism contrasting beautifully with its catchy and infectiously vibrant features.
“DEAD SUMMER” is just one of those EPs that are less heard and more experienced. There is a lot of musical greatness in this over the 14-minute listening experience. It sees Levi and Dead build upon their genre-defying, unpredictable musical landscapes to fashion a unique, deeply relatable, and cathartic musical experience.
