Hip-hop’s most powerful records often come from artists documenting the places that raised them. On The Collar City Blues, Brooklyn-born, Troy-raised rapper Per DM, now based in Buffalo, does exactly that.

The project centers on Griswold Heights, the Troy housing complex known locally as “The Heights.”

Across nine tracks, Per DM reflects on the environment he grew up around — one filled with hustle, survival, and ambition.

The lead single “Trenches” stands as the emotional centerpiece of the project. Driven by a jazzy bassline layered over classic hip-hop drums, the track explores the psychological weight of growing up in the projects.

“I did like 13 years you in them ‘jects, look what it did to me.”

The line serves as a mission statement for the album.

Elsewhere, “Dealing Calendars” captures the everyday rhythm of street economics, turning neighborhood routines into vivid lyrical storytelling.

The project balances these gritty realities with ambition. On “See the Top,” Per DM channels determination and forward momentum, while “Livin in the Ghetto” provides a smoother listening moment with the album’s only harmonized hook.

Together, the songs form a narrative about environment, growth, and the drive to rise beyond circumstances.
